Corvara 2026

Today was again a travel day. This time leaving the growing Olympic conflagration on the village of Cortina for another star in the Italian Dolomites, the village of Corvara. As the crow flies it's less than 20 miles between the two mountain towns. However, there is no direct public transportation on the winding road so the journey led north back to Toblach/Dobbiaco then west to the city of Brunico then south to Corvara. The trip took about 3 hours on three different buses.

In this part of Italy the two dominate languages are German and Italian. One of the bus drivers spoke enough English to advise us on where to transfer buses.

We passed a several of castles and ski areas along the way. Some of the ski areas looked very inviting.

The accomodations in Corvara are sweet! There is an adult spa. There are pools and water toys for kids on two of the floors. They also provide breakfast which is highly unusual.

I've had a relapse with the cold I had just before departing for Europe. I doubt it's curing me, but the spa helps with the symptoms.

We chilled today. I needed it to help with my cold relapse. Or hotel has a wonderful spa with two saunas, steam room, hot tub, and lounging areas. The steam room turned out to be the cure for my cold. This place also includes a very extensive breakfast spread.

We walked into town for lunch. The sun came out while doing that which afforded us a brief and beautiful view of some of the surrounding mountains.

The clouds settled in today. Up to 7 inches of snow is forecast. It started snowing around 9AM and just now slowed at 5PM. It doesn't look to but a couple of inches in Corvara.

The hotel shuttle dropped us a short distance away at the Boé gondola this morning. There are at least 3 and maybe 4 gondolas that start in or around the town. We rode up with a couple of Germans who've been coming here for over 30 years.

We took a chairlift up to a high point before the clouds really socked in. Still the flat light made skiing difficult today.

There is a very large area of the skiing around Corvara I hoped to explore, but it is all high and the visibility conditions meant we skipped it. Apparently many people quit early today for the same reason.

There is also a popular ski loop here called the Sellaronda which I'd hoped to try. It circles a set of Dolomite mountains. The Germains said it takes 6 hours. With nothing to see because of the weather and me dealing with a cold, I'm skipping the endeavor.

I enjoyed the steam room again. I thought I'd be a couple of weeks recovering but the steam has me almost back to feeling normal in just a couple of days - yay!!!

Back in Cortina I had purchased a deck of cards. The last couple of days Ron taught me a game called casino and I refreshed him on cribbage. Tonight we played cards.

Ron and my paths diverged today has he boarded a bus for a different destination.

Myself, I strapped on the skis again and made my to Corvara. The first lift I tried to board denied me access with the IKON pass. I was like a fish swimming upstream against the current to back out of the line as there was no other way to exit. I checked the pass at another lift for confirmation and then headed over to the ticket office. I suspected I'd run out of days on the pass for the SuperSki Dolomiti areas: 3 Zinnen, Cortina, and Corvara. Yup, I had used up the 5 days alloted. So I purchased a single day pass for Corvara and Colfosco only at €80.

The clouds were starting to break up. I hoped for enough clear skies to see some of the surrounding peaks. I was not disappointed. However the first gondola ride took me into thick clouds and limited visibility. I skied runs Ron and I hadn't gotten to yesterday. There was plenty of powder to dip my skis into. Off piste once, I started dropping down a steep powder pitch only to find I'd been on a fence and the downhill side had a snow cavity. I did a somersault with a face plant half way through. It took me a spell to get all the snow cleaned off.

As afternoon started, I took the gondola connecting Corvara with Colfosco. I then skied all the lifts at Colfosco. There wasn't the powder at Colfosco as I enjoyed in the morning at Corvara, but the air temperatures were running above 32ºF so the snow was getting heavy and sticky. I actually had to take my skis off once during the day to scrap off the snow stuck to the bottoms. At 2:30PM though, the sun slipped behind clouds and a cold wind could be felt. I made a few more runs then headed to the lodge.

I've really been enjoying the spa at the Movi Family Lodge. It's been helping my lungs. So I went for another treatment late this afternoon.
