Uncharacteristically, I awoke early, had breakfast in my car outside a Safeway and Starbucks, and arrived at the Mt Bachelor ski area as the lifts were opening.
The ski area is on a dormant quintessential volcano mountain. The groomed runs are on the north side of the mountain and off piste runs are on the south side. Most of the runs are ideal for skiers that like groomed blue to green runs. I enjoyed and was entertained by the undulating narrow runs through the trees on the east side of the mountain. The chair to the top of the mountain was slow and that along with the cold wind made the ride a one time event. This chair deposited me above timberline and with very very wind blown hard packed snow conditions. I peaked at the runs off the southside just beyond the warning signs not to ski alone and easily elected to skip that experience for the day.
I slowly worked my way around the mountain from east to west. Turns out the steep powder tree filled runs are off the Northwest chair lift. By the time I arrived my knees had had enough and I only managed a couple of runs. The upper spectacular lodge is on the west side of the mountain just north of the Outback chair; its definitely worth a visit.
I was graced by warmer temperatures, a wind the calmed by the end of the day, and some hidden fresh powder. I'd go back if I was in the area.
